The Medora Health Program is a combination of School Health Program and Oral Help Program

Goal:
making a start with the awareness about general and oral hygiene ( “Brush at school” )and to learn to practice this by washing hands and brushing teeth, supported by biannual deworming. Supplemented by oral examination to enumerate the oral health of the children and pain prevention and release if possible.

Targetgroup: Children of primary and secondary school and children who don’t go to school.

Brush at school:”Brush at school” is a school-based, health intervention program based on by the  “Fit For School” program developed in Philippines.

Additional: Oral Health Program. Oral Examination, based on the modified PUFA-score, followed by  dental treatment on the CHC supported by Medora. Medical Health Program . Medical check of the children by a doctor and follow up if necessary.

  • Keshav Pandey, Kathmandu, Sauraha board member of CHCN and general manager, overall contact person
  • Rajendra Kharel Sauraha, board member of CHCN and medical worker in Sauraha
  • Other Board members of CHCN, Sauraha, general support CHCN
  • Volunteers of Sauraha
  • Medical assistant , Dentist, Oral hygienist who is working on the centre
  • Dental and or Medical team from Holland / Belgium

Schools in the surrounding of the CHC who will be visited:

      What about children who don’t go to school, they should also get the opportunity to get these program. How to manage this problem?

      Evaluation previous Medora Health Programs:
      Visiting previous schools which already has been followed the program to check if fit for school is implemented well. What are possible problems, questions. hand washing , tooth brushing, and toilet cleaning should be checked. And the 6 month deworming also should be checked and if necessary repeated.

      General steps to follow  MHP:
      Before leaving Holland for Chitwan:

      1. Keshav and Raj should be informed when program will be planned

      2. Which school(s) will be visited  

      3. Inform parents and teachers about the program if possible they have to agree and give their permission.

      4. Making  list of children  per class with name surname birthdates by teacher and put in computer before.

      5. Buying necessary things for the program

      6. Explaining to children what will be done, no treatment at school just information and practicing and oral examination

      7. Check if necessary water supply is available for hand washing and tooth brushin

      When we have arrived in Chitwan before program at school

      Tooth brushing: once a day (at least) at school in groups (class) after eating once a day at school

      6. Oral hygiene education guide NOHS, Omlo

      1. toothpaste for every kid to take home
      2. toothpaste in little container for school brushing
      3. toothbrushes one for school one to take home both with cap
      4. Stickers with instructions about tooth brushing
      5. There must be water to clean brush after brushing, no rinse
      6. There must me a room to brush teeth or special room
      7. Brush holder for brushes
      8. Water resist pen to write name on brush

      Steps to follow:

      presentation of the information as mentioned above per class
      hand over toothbrush for each kid with name and nr on it
      toothbrushing as a group per class outside or in specially room
      taking in the toothbrush handing and put in holder
      handing over sticker with instructions to take home with another toothbrush

      Somebody from the Medora team to give instructions as above 1
      Somebody who will give the information in future also translating 1
      A child in each class to help

      3-Theoretical Information about Nutrition, Diseases, General hygiene,personal hygiene
      4-practical information about, handwassing and cutting nails, deworming tablet will be applied

      Objectives:  is to learn and practice children about Nutrition, Diseases, General hygiene and personal hygiene

      Information: about general hygiene and personal hygiene, why, when
      Instruction: how to manage general hygiene and personal hygiene
      Instruction: how to clean toilets
      Hand washing: once a day (at least) at school in groups before eating, nail cutting once week
      Deworming: twice a year

      What do we need

      1. Content of the presentation
      2. Materials to show how
      3. Soap for every kid (1 piece for school and one to take home)
      4. Stickers with intructions about handwashing
      5. Nail cutters
      6. Deworming tablets
      7. There must be water to wash hands
      8. There must be a room to wash hands or outside
      9. Materials to clean toilets

      Steps to follow:

      presentation of the information as mentioned above per class

      1. hand over soap for each kid
      2. nail cutting
      3. washing hands as a group per class outside or in specially room
      4. handing over deworming tablets, while coming in class again check if tablets have been swallowed
      5. handing over sticker with instructions to take home with another piece of soap
      6. inspection of the toilets and instructions how and when to clean
